The BPDLP is a foundational training programme for new recruits entering the South African Police Service. Phase 1: Academy Training (First 10 Months) During the initial phase of training, recruits spend 10 months at the SAPS Academy. Here, they undergo intensive theoretical and practical training that covers a wide range of subjects essential to policing. Recruits receive a monthly stipend of R3,175.00 to support them during this foundational period. Accommodation and meals are provided, ensuring that recruits can focus entirely on their training without financial concerns. Additionally, they have access to Polmed medical aid under a lower plan.
Phase 2 and 3: Workplace Training (Next 12 Months) Following the academy phase, recruits move to various police stations across the country for on-the-job training. This phase lasts for 12 months and includes integrated assessments to evaluate the application of knowledge and skills in real-world policing scenarios. Recruits earn a monthly salary of R7,275.00 during this phase. Unlike the academy phase, recruits are responsible for their own meals and accommodation during this period. They receive Polmed medical aid under either a lower or higher plan, depending on their preference, as well as access to the SAPS pension fund and all other statutory benefits, including leave and allowances.
Permanent Appointment After 24 Months Upon successful completion of the 24-month programme, recruits are eligible for permanent appointment as fully-fledged police officers within the SAPS. At this stage, officers receive a monthly salary of R10,307.00, reflecting their transition to full-fledged members of the SAPS. They are entitled to all benefits applicable to SAPS Act members, ensuring their well-being and security as they continue their career in law enforcement.
