PURPOSE OF THE JOB:
Direct and co-ordinate the provision of Engineering services to the mining operation to ensure maximum operational availability according to mine and business objectives.
Responsible for ensuring legal compliance, development of engineering strategy and policy, as well as effective asset management that meets business objectives.

KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS:
Strategic plan development and implementation
1. Developing and implementing the engineering policy and strategy.

2. Ongoing evaluation and alignment of engineering strategy to the operational strategy and direction and objectives of the mine.

3. Ensuring mining processes, policies and practices are compliant with relevant statutory requirements.
Financial Perspective

Financial and budgetary effectiveness
1. Interpret the strategic and operational requirements of the engineering function and integrate financial needs to ensure the availability of financial resources.

2. Deliver and manage an annual budget that represents best estimate of costs and supports the attainment of the organisation and business unit’s financial objectives.

3. Allocate and monitor the utilisation of allocated funds to enable the attainment of objectives.

4. Regularly review and proactively monitor and appropriately respond to spend against budget.

5. Manage and report expenditure according to financial procedure.

Internal Business Process Perspective
Engineering effectiveness

1. Lead the compilation, implementation and execution of the operational business plan regarding the provision of engineering services and expertise by:
• Extracting the engineering requirements from the business plan to support business plan and setting objectives for these;
• Ensuring the delegation of objectives to operating engineering personnel within a control framework to ensure that objectives and standards are continuously monitored, achieved and reported upon;
• Taking appropriate action when it becomes evident that operational objectives and standards may not be achieved and providing advice on how the situation could be rectified;
• Monitor and manage the planned maintenance schedules and plans.

2. Implement and maintain engineering systems and processes in a manner that will ensure:
• Accurate reporting information on a regular basis as required;
• Highlighting of sub-standard performance, processes and systems;
• Engineering employees understanding their roles and being managed in a manner as to perform to the requirements of their roles;
• Equipment being supplied, used and maintained in a manner supportive of the achievement of operational objectives.

3. Interpret organisational requirements for Engineering Services to develop, implement and maintain a strategy to ensure the attainment of short, medium and long term business objectives.

People Perspective

People management/ leadership
1. Provide management/leadership and guidance to the engineering function and its employees; ensuring:
• Attraction, recruitment, development and motivation of employees;
• Alignment, measurement and management of employees efforts and performance towards the attainment of function and organisational objectives;
• Resolving of disputes, grievances and conflicts.

2. Ensure the proper utilisation of Human Resources for the engineering function to ensure a competent skills base for the continued success of the function and organisation through:
• Performance management practices;
• Learning and development programmes;
• Succession planning programmes and practices;
• Reward and recognition practices;
• Coaching and mentoring practices.

3. Ensuring a healthy and safe work environment for employees.

Stakeholder engagement and management
1. Manage relations with internal and external stakeholders to promote objectives of the company.

Ensure that the needs of organisational stakeholders are prioritised and managed including:
• Management and the executive team
• Colleagues and employees;
• Shareholders and investors;
• Community and external stakeholders.

2. Work with colleagues, organization officials and staff members to discuss issues, coordinate activities, or resolve problems.


Customer Perspective
Customer Relations Management

1. Management of internal customer expectations; identifying performance standards, customer requirements and the effective delivery of engineering services to the business.

2. Manage the engineering functions performance in terms of agreed "Service Level Agreements" and agreed KPA/KPI's and effectiveness areas.

3. Driving customer satisfaction throughout the provision of engineering services.

4. Building relationship across the organisation by sharing business information, knowledge and expertise.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
- Appropriate tertiary qualification(s) in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering (i.e. Engineering Degree – NQF 7)
- Government Certificate of Competency, Mines and Works (GCC).
- 5 years experience in mining engineering post GCC as well as extensive 2.13.1 legal appointment (Engineering Manager) experience

PREFERRED QUALIFICATION
• Appropriate post graduate qualification(s) in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering
• Tertiary business qualification (MDP, EDP, MBA) (NQF 8) beneficial
• Project management qualification beneficial.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED • 10 years’ experience in Mining Engineering
• 5 years’ experience in a managerial role
• Well conversant with Asset Care principles
• Good knowledge of Project management with proven Project management experience
• Proven record of multi-disciplinary experience and knowledge in mechanical, electrical, instrumentation and civil engineering

LEGAL REQUIREMENTS
Mining Health and Safety Act Legal Appointment:
2.13.1 Legal Appointment (Engineering Manager)
A valid driver’s license – Code B
Government Certificate of Competency, Mines and Works.
